Green Day-Backed Comedy Film ‘New Years Rev’ is Officially in the Works

A new comedy film inspired by Green Day’s early years is officially on the way.

New Years Rev, a road trip film about a young band chasing a dream, is currently in production. Filming recently began in Oklahoma, with all three members of Green Day involved as producers.

Live Nation Productions is backing the film, which follows three friends who mistakenly believe they’ve landed an opening slot for a Green Day New Year’s Eve show in Los Angeles. The mix-up then sends the trio on a chaotic cross-country journey. It’s a story that echoes the band’s real-life early days of living in a van and playing basement gigs.

Billie Joe Armstrong reflected on that era in a statement to Variety: “Van days rule. You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of. But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family, and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known.”

Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust lead the cast as the trio of aspiring musicians. Lee Kirk is directing, with Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey (both of The Office) also starring, alongside Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo, son of actor Mark Ruffalo.

Live Nation’s Ryan Kroft described New Years Rev as “a story of young artists chasing a dream—long nights, endless miles, and the electrifying rush of the stage fuelling their journey.”

Green Day’s involvement ensures New Years Rev will capture the raw, messy, and reckless energy that defines starting out in punk rock. The film has yet to receive a release date, but with the band backing it, expect a truly wild soundtrack.

Meanwhile, Green Day are in the middle of a busy year following the release of their 14th album, Saviors. They’re set for a European tour this summer, with rumours swirling that they’ll headline Glastonbury 2025.
