Because apparently, nothing is sacred anymore, Bambi: The Reckoning is here to turn your childhood nightmares into reality.
The first full-length trailer for the indie horror flick has dropped. It reveals a mutated, vengeful deer that has zero chill and a serious body count.
Brought to you by the same people responsible for Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Jagged Edge Productions is once again capitalising on expired IP. They are asking the very important question: what if beloved childhood characters went on a killing spree?
The film reimagines Bambi, a Life in the Woods—originally a 1923 novel that inspired Disney’s 1942 classic as a blood-soaked revenge flick. The official synopsis lays it out: “After a mother and son get in a car wreck, they soon become hunted by Bambi. In this movie though, Bambi is a mutated grief-stricken deer on a deadly rampage seeking revenge for the death of his mother.” So, basically John Wick if Keanu Reeves had antlers.
The two-minute trailer gives us a first proper look at this twisted take on Bambi, showing him flipping cars, attacking unsuspecting victims, and generally being the kind of deer you’d never want to see on a camping trip. The internet, as always, has thoughts. Some horror fans are hyped, calling it a proper return to the darker roots of fairy tales. Others are exhausted by the whole “turn public domain characters into slasher villains” gimmick.
One person wrote, “Arm the animals against the hunters! YES!” while another questioned, “Does anyone actually like these movies?” A fair question, considering the Poohniverse (yes, that’s what it’s called) is expanding into a full-blown horror cinematic universe. Even though I’m not sure that’s something that any of us were asking for.
Bambi: The Reckoning is out later this year. Prepare accordingly.
