Bostorn-born besties Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are two cops in trouble in Netflix’s new thriller, The Rip.
It could be that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are having fun playing around in different genres together. The last time they were on screen together it was in Ridley Scott‘s medieval rape drama, The Last Duel. Now it’s all gritty cops ‘n’ robbers in the latest crime thriller from Joe Carnahan. director of The Grey and Narc.
The Rip Trailer
What’s the plot?
As the official synopsis tells us:
Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.
Which puts me in mind of David Ayer’s gleefully sleazy Sabotage, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sam Worthington. But so far the plot details we’ve seen are a bit generic, to be honest. Still, Affleck and Damon as corrupt cops should be fun.
Who’s in it?
- Matt Damon as Lieutenant Dane Dumars.
- Ben Affleck as Detective Sergeant JD Byrne.
- Steven Yeun as Detective Mike Ro.
- Teyana Taylor as Detective Numa Baptiste.
- Sasha Calle as Desi.
- Catalina Sandino Moreno as Detective Lolo Salazar.
- Kyle Chandler as DEA Agent Mateo ‘Matty’ Nix.
- Lina Esco as Jackie Velez.
- Scott Adkins.
- Néstor Carbonell.
When’s it out?
The Rip hits Netflix on January 16, 2026.
What’s the vibe?
Well, I’m intrigued. As a director, Joe Carnahan can be a bit uneven, but when he’s on point he’s the duck’s nuts. The Rip seems to be digging into murky moral themes, and Carnahan’s no stranger to that territory. The Grey proved that amply, but check out his second film, 2002’s low budget cop drama Narc, to see what I’m really talking about.
