Gallery: Metallica @ Marvel Stadium, Melbourne

Share

On a cold and rainy Saturday in Melbourne, metal fans old, young and everything in between flocked to Marvel Stadium to behold Metallica’s first Aussie tour in a long while. We were there to capture it all.

Kicking things off for Metallica’s Melbourne show were Californian crossover thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies, who brought their unique style and energy to the masses the only way they know how. Groovy, fast, and in your face, it was a party from start to finish.

Fellow American rockers Evanescence were up next and they turned things up a notch with their brand of big stage rock. Singer Amy Lee’s voice beautifully and hauntingly filled the whole stadium and together with her bandmates, showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Metallica came out swinging from the get go, hitting fans with old classics in Creeping Death and For Whom The Bell Tolls, then seamlessly weaving their way through their giant discography.

Fast, slow, heavy, soft, fans got it all, and Metallica even kindly warmed the crowd up after a freezing and rainy day with a whole lot of pyro magic during the likes of Fuel and Moth Into Flame.

Singer James Hetfield always makes sure to show a lot of love to the crowd and last night was no exception. Hetfield pointed out that no matter what madness is happening in the world, people always have music and the Metallica family is forever – a feeling that resonated throughout the stadium, no matter where anyone was standing or sitting. In amongst the wholesome message though, the frontman’s cheeky sense of humour was intact, joking that they finally returned after 1000 years.

Metallica always delivers the goods and gave Melburnians a master class in showmanship and stage presence, while throwing in a good dose of humility.

All in all, this was a fun night from start to finish, full of high energy, big riffs, and a whole lotta love.
