Superman and Slow Horses Dominate This Week’s Streaming Charts

Share

It’s all flying guys and farting spies as the new DCU flagship hots HBO.

Well, it’s hardly surprising that HBO Max had the number one streaming movie in Australia this week, given that James Gunn’s Superman has made its streaming debut. The DCU’s flagship is still playing in a few cinemas here and there, which speaks to the movie’s legs. It’s the sort of film that does a lot of repeat business and is gonna keep doing well in cinemas over the school holidays, although that’ll taper off quickly.

Further down it’s a real mixed bag – Locked is the sort of high concept thriller that used to do solid box office regardless of quality back in the day, so it’s no surprise its come in hot after bypassing theatrical locally.

The biggest surprise on this week’s chart is The End Of The Tour, a bittersweet character piece from 2015 that stars Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel as writers David Lipssky and David Foster Wallace. It’s a beautiful little film and worth your time, so it’s nice to see it get the fabled “Netflix bump”. Give it a spin if Superman is starting to lose its luster.

But it’s Apple TV+ who have taken the TV top slot with the return of Gary Oldman’s grumpy, gut-troubled elder spy, Jackson Lamb, in season five of Slow Horses. Crime thrillers have the run of the chart after that, with Netflix’s Black Rabbit, House Of Guinness, and Wayward; HBO’s Task, and The Lowdown on Disney+ all placing. Really, your only non-crime-related choices this week are the science fiction/horror Alien: Earth and the Emmy-lauded medical drama, The Pitt, and even those are edge cases.
