Daryl Hall & John Oates Have Finally Settled Their Legal Dispute, No Reason Given

Daryl Hall & John Oates have finally made their dreams come true and have ended their legal dispute.

The matter was resolved outside of court, according to legal documents filed in Nashville on Monday. According to The Rolling Stone, Hall’s suit against Oates has been resolved through arbitration, meaning there are no details available on how the matter was settled.

In 2023, the legendary 80s pop duo had suddenly ended their partnership in a bitter feud. The fallout was so tense that Hall would take out a restraining order on Oates. The reason? Oates had decided to sell his share of their back catalogue and IP to the publishing company Primary Wave, which Hall described as “the ultimate partnership betrayal”.

In a November 2023 declaration to the court, Hall claimed Oates went behind his back, negotiated with Primary Wave in secret, then ambushed him. Hall and Oates were co-owners of Whole Oats Enterprises, a partnership that Oates had negotiated to sell to the publishing company.

Hall shared in a declaration that he disagreed with Primary Wave’s business model and believed the sale could cause “unimaginable” harm to WOE’s assets.

“Over the course of the last several years, there has been a significant shift in John Oates’ behaviour away from operating in a professional and business-minded manner, particularly as it relates to WOE. His behaviour has become adversarial and aggressive instead of professional and courteous,” Hall wrote. “It appears to me that John Oates’ intent has become to burden and harass me without regard to my interests as his business partner, or the interests of WOE.”

Given the volatile nature of the lawsuit lodged against Oates in 2023, it’s surprising to see a settlement handled outside of court. Does this mean we’ll eventually see the pair on the stage back together again? We’ll have to see.
