Stone Temple Pilots singer Jeff Gutt is back in the studio finishing We Are Not Machines’ debut album with Evanescence drummer Will Hunt, a project he began a decade ago and has been unable to leave half-done.
Speaking with Paul Cashmere for Noise11, Gutt said he is working daily in Los Angeles to complete the record ahead of Stone Temple Pilots Australian return for LOOKOUT next March.
“I’m right now finishing that record, after 10 years, that I was starting, ’cause I got it halfway finished. And I’m in the studio daily here in L.A., finishing that up,” he said, as transcribed by Blabbermouth.
A different producer is now involved, which means finding a way to make the earlier recordings work alongside the new sessions. Gutt also said a guitarist was due to fly in, although he did not name them.
Will Hunt has stayed with the project
Hunt has remained involved throughout, even as the record stretched across years of commitments elsewhere.
“Will Hunt’s in that, and he’s been in it for 10 years, so he’s been a believer the whole time. He’s been in it longer than that, actually.”
Gutt’s determination to finish it comes through clearly in the interview: “It’s something I need to do in my life, is finish that record. I can’t just leave it halfway done.”
He would also like to take We Are Not Machines on the road, though finding time between Stone Temple Pilots and Evanescence will dictate what is possible. Festivals and shorter touring windows are options he hopes to explore.
