I’m a fairly simple man. When I see the name Julian Casablancas, I listen. This was the easy reality I was confronted with this morning. Casablanca’s had released new music.
The track is entitled ‘Blue Demon’ and has been taken from the bands new EP. Dripping with synths and slightly futuristic sounds, the track sounds like something you might hear as a diegetic sound in a Blade Runner film.
Casablanca’s vocals laid over the track also lean heavily into auto- tune, a near staple for The Voidz music. The lyrics for the song reveal a conflict with another that Casablanca’s is clearly trying to grapple with. They include: “And In The Name Of Our Lord & Savior/ We Fight Each Other / Like Two Brothers / Father Forgive Me Intifada / Too Many Babies / Dead Like Their Mothers.”
The song was first teased via the bands Instagram account with a variety of AI posts. The first of the released clips sees a news reporter reading a letter from Tron Cole, a fake ‘social media manager’ who had threatened to leak the bands music.
The track is the first taster of the the music currently contained within the Voidz forthcoming EP. It is ostensibly due for release later this year.
The songs release coincides with Casablanca’s having a bit of a career renaissance. He was recently featured on Charli XCX’s Brat remix album on the track ‘Mean Girls’. The collaboration was unexpected, yet given track record, came as no real surprise either.
For those looking for Casablanca’s to return to making music for the Strokes any time soon, you’re not in luck. Casablanca’s recently admitted that the Strokes classic ‘Last Nite’ was ‘dead to him’. He has also previously hinted that he has ‘stepped away a little bit’ from his ‘very cool’ day job in the Strokes.
So while the Strokes might not be releasing anything anytime soon, Casablanca’s is very much around.
