Kneecap Call Out Coachella After Livestream Cuts Anti-Thatcher and Pro-Palestine Chants

Share

Kneecap played their first Coachella set on Friday night (April 11), and it didn’t take long for the chaos to spill offstage.

The Irish trio namely: Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí used their Sonora tent slot to do what they always do: start a party, stir the pot, and call out the people they think deserve it. This time, it was a familiar target. “If anybody was wondering, Margaret Thatcher’s still dead,” they told the crowd, before launching into the ‘Maggie’s In A Box’ chant—sung to the tune of KC and The Sunshine Band’s ‘Give It Up’. The crowd took it from there.

But if you were watching from home, you wouldn’t have seen any of it.

Kneecap took to X after the set, responding to reports that the livestream had mysteriously skipped the Thatcher chant. According to the group, it wasn’t just the anti-Tory moment that got the chop their onstage messages in support of Palestine also didn’t make it to air. “Not the only thing that was cut,” they wrote. “Our messaging on the US-backed genocide in Gaza somehow never appeared on screens either.”

They’ve made it clear they’re not backing down, promising it’ll be “sorted” before they return to the festival next weekend. No word yet if Coachella or YouTube plan to comment or just pretend the whole thing didn’t happen.

Kneecap have never been one to shy away from their politics, on or off stage. Last year, they helped raise close to £100,000 for a gym in the Aida Refugee Camp. They’ve also courageously slammed political leaders at home, protested Israel’s actions in Gaza, and taken aim at just about every power structure in front of them.

So no, they weren’t coming to California to play nice. And Coachella probably should’ve seen that coming I mean, it’s Kneecap we’re talking about.
