La Dispute Announce New Album No One Was Driving the Car, Drop New Songs

Share

La Dispute have announced their new album, due out this September, alongside the release of the first three songs.

La Dispute have announced their long-awaited new album No One Was Driving the Car, due out September 5 via Epitaph Records. Alongside the reveal, the post-hardcore veterans have released the album’s first act, including the single “I Shaved My Head,” which arrives today with an official video.

The new record marks La Dispute’s first full-length release since 2019’s Panorama. Self-produced by the band, No One Was Driving the Car is a conceptual body of work inspired by Paul Schrader’s First Reformed, threading existential crisis, emotional detachment and societal decay through its structure. The album’s title was lifted from a news article about a fatal self-driving Tesla accident, a moment that sparked the band’s examination of autonomy, responsibility and disconnection in the modern age.

Screens and digital interference loom large across the album’s lyrics, which are filled with images of personal and environmental collapse. Dead animals and failed relationships appear alongside flashes of surrealism and street-level grit. Jordan Dreyer’s vocal delivery seesaws between sharp-edged screams and refined, melodic passages, while the instrumentation packs a sharp punch.

La Dispute’s new album will be released in acts leading up to its full release. The first three tracks – “I Shaved My Head,” “Man with Hands and Ankles Bound,” and “Autofiction Detail” – form a single-night narrative arc that begins with a man alone in a bathroom and ends with a desperate visit to a hospital. Dreyer describes the section as a meditation on desire, failure, and the unraveling of selfhood, following the protagonist on a late-night walk toward something resembling reckoning.
