Mark Hoppus has always had a way with emotional chaos — onstage, in his lyrics, and apparently, deep inside post-apocalyptic video games too.
The Blink-182 bassist took to social media this week to share how he plays The Last of Us, and it’s… very on brand. “Sometimes I turn on The Last Of Us video game and get to a spot where I’m safe but can still hear the screams of the damned,” he wrote. “Then I just set the game down and enjoy the vibe.”
That’s right. While most of us are panic-crafting molotovs and sneak-stabbing Clickers to survive, Hoppus is vibing in the corner — emotionally sipping a metaphorical black coffee while the world burns outside. It’s peak emo behaviour really. Somewhere, a single tear is rolling down the face of a zombie.
Fans, naturally, loved it. “Glad to see Mark can be as unhinged as the rest of us,” one user replied. Maybe the apocalypse hits different when you’ve already survived cancer, pop-punk wars, and every band breakup under the sun.
It’s not Hoppus’ first dive into pixelated comfort. Back in 2020, he covered Blink’s ‘Dammit’ using Ellie’s acoustic guitar in The Last Of Us Part II, proving even in fictional dystopias, the pop-punk spirit won’t die. He’s also an Animal Crossing guy, which kind of checks out. Because if he’s not soaking in video game despair, he’s probably arranging flowers and fishing while listening to Disintegration on loop.
For all the sarcasm, it’s pretty endearing. Hoppus has always blurred the line between dark humour and emotional honesty, and this is just another reminder that even pop-punk icons need weird little rituals to feel something.
So next time you’re knee-deep in infected and stress, maybe take a page from Mark. Find a quiet corner, soak in the screams, and let the end of the world wash over you like a sad, reverb-drenched outro.
Punk rock never dies. It just waits patiently in a safe zone, enjoying the vibe of course.
