Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus has revealed that The Cure’s Robert Smith once tried to make out with him—and honestly, he’s not mad about it. I wouldn’t be either.
The moment happened in 2004 after The Cure joined Blink-182 onstage at Wembley Arena to perform their collaborative track ‘All Of This’. The after-party got loose, and according to Hoppus, things took a weird but memorable turn.
“My wife and I are like, ‘Alright, we’re out. See you later,’ and then Robert tries to kiss me,” he said in an interview with Us Weekly. “He was my hero… I should’ve done that. Why not? It’s a much better story than he tried to kiss me and it was awkward.”
The story appears in Hoppus’ new memoir Fahrenheit-182 which is releases this week. Hoppus didn’t give Smith a heads-up, admitting: “I should have called him… But how do you even bring that up?”
Still, it sounds like there’s no bad blood between the two. “I’ve seen him several times since, and it’s been totally cool. Nobody’s talked about it,” Hoppus said, adding that Smith was “feeling saucy” and “having fun” at the time.
The book dives into more than just awkward rock party moments. Hoppus gets into his 2021 cancer diagnosis, brutal chemo treatments, and the emotional toll of facing death head-on. He also talks about reconnecting with Tom DeLonge and mending old wounds.
Hoppus was declared cancer-free later that year. Since then, Blink-182 have dropped a comeback album, One More Time, and kicked off a full-blown reunion. They’re now gearing up for a massive US tour with Alkaline Trio starting in August.
As for the kiss? Hoppus wasn’t fazed. “I wasn’t bummed in the slightest. I was more, like, flabbergasted that nobody else saw it.”
If you think about it, it’s just another story from a band that’s built a career on chaos, chemistry, and never taking themselves too seriously. Straight from the Blink-182 textbook really.
