Megadeth have been teasing the track list for their upcoming final self-titled album on social media, and fans reckon one of the tracks will be a cover of Metallica’s ‘Ride The Lightning’.
Megadeth have slowly been revealing the tracklist for their upcoming self-titled final album, and fans believe one of the songs will be a cover of Metallica‘s ‘Ride The Lightning’.
Frontman Dave Mustaine‘s history with the song runs deep, as he was actually be a co-writer on the famous metal track during his short stint as a member of the celebrated metal band.
Mustaine has also already hinted on the Norwegian Radio Program Stjernepose that the new album will “have 13 new songs for the new album… One of the songs is a cover song but I actually wrote it, so it’s kind of like a cover, kind of like my song.”
Based off on Mustaine’s history with Metallica, it’s fair to assume that’s what he’s hinting towards. Besides, a more perfect send-off for Megadeth couldn’t exist. Mustaine spent years stoking a rivalry with his old band, so closing Megadeth’s final album with the frontman’s former band makes for a bittersweet finale.
Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica and replaced with Kirk Hammett before the recording of their 1983 album, Kill ‘Em All, and would receive four songwriting credits on the album. Despite being out of the band for some time, he would also receive a songwriting credit on Metallica’s 1984 breakout album Ride the Lightning, and is credited with co-writing the title track and ‘The Call of Ktulu’.
Megadeth would reveal all 10 new tracks for the album on X this morning; however, Spotify lists an 11th song on the tracklist, which could potentially be the iconic 80s song
Mustaine shared in a press statement that the decision to end the band is due to the guitarist wanting to go out on his terms:
“There’s so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional,” Mustaine said in a press statement. “Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now. I have travelled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them.”
He continued: “We can’t wait for you to hear this album and see us on tour. If there was ever a perfect time for us to put out a new album, it’s now. If there was ever a perfect time to tour the world, it’s now. This is also a perfect time for us to tell you that it’s our last studio album. We’ve made a lot of friends over the years, and I hope to see all of you on our global farewell tour.”
Megadeth’s final self-titled album releases January 23rd.
