Metallica hit Sydney tonight for the last Australian date of the M72 2025 run and delivered one final nod to the country before heading out.
Midway through the set, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo rolled out the last of their Australian doodle sessions, breaking into an instrumental version of For Those About To Rock before Rob stepped forward and sang Nice Boys Don’t Play Rock ’n’ Roll by Rose Tattoo. It was loose, loud and exactly the kind of local touch fans have been waiting for on the final stop.
The timing couldn’t have been better. AC/DC are in Melbourne right now preparing for their second MCG show, the whole city is running on rock energy and the country has been caught in the middle of a rare moment where everything lines up at once. We covered the bigger picture in the feature on the current Melbourne rock moment, and Metallica tipping their hat to both AC/DC and Rose Tattoo in Sydney felt like the last piece of it.
Each city on the tour has scored its own doodle moment. Perth got a John Butler Trio break. Melbourne were hit with a Living End riff. Brisbane might have topped the lot with The Chats’ Smoko.
Tonight brought the run full circle. For the last Australian doodle session, Kirk hit the opening AC/DC line clean and heavy without needing vocals, and Rob following it with Rose Tattoo landed like a proper farewell. No gimmicks. No overthinking. Just two songs that mean something here, however there was a sense of finality, both in the performance and crowd reaction as Metallica prepare to head to Auckland after the show
