My Chemical Romance have landed their first US No.1 album with The Black Parade, following its UK chart success and Gerard Way’s announcement that the band want to make a new record in 2027.
The album has jumped from No.139 to the top of the Billboard 200 following its 20th anniversary reissue, finally moving beyond the No.2 position it reached in 2006 to lead the chart dated November 7th.
According to Billboard, using Luminate data, The Black Parade earned 78,000 equivalent album units in the US during the tracking week ending October 29th. Album purchases accounted for 68,000 of that total, including 42,000 vinyl sales, making it My Chemical Romance’s strongest vinyl week yet.
The anniversary edition was available in more than 20 variants across vinyl, CD and cassette, with purchases and streams from all versions counting towards its chart position. Those physical sales drove the climb, which also set a record for the longest wait between an album’s release and its first Billboard 200 No.1.
The Black Parade tops the US and UK charts
As previously reported, the reissue also delivered MCR’s first UK No.1 album. In 2006, Robbie Williams’ Rudebox kept it at No.2 in Britain, while the Hannah Montana soundtrack took the top spot in the US. Two decades later, it has topped both charts.
The anniversary edition brings together material from the original album sessions and live recordings, including ‘Someone Out There Loves You’, also known to fans as ‘Stay’.
Gerard Way looks towards a new MCR record
The chart double comes as the band begin looking beyond their anniversary celebrations. During their October 30th Hollywood Bowl show, Way told the crowd: “Next year we wanna make a record”.
He followed that with a caveat for anyone hoping to catch them live: “We’re probably not going to do any shows”. As detailed in our coverage of MCR’s recording plans, he left room for an occasional appearance if the band get rusty while working on new music.
A new studio album would be their first since 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys. There is no announced release date, and Way’s hope of seeing fans again in 2028 is not a confirmed tour.
