Oasis closed out their final homecoming show at Heaton Park last night with a direct nod to the fans on ‘Gallagher Hill’, handing out custom t-shirts and livestreaming the crowd to the main stage screens.
The hill, which sits just outside the official gig space, drew attention earlier in the week after Manchester City Council attempted to fence it off. Despite warnings, fans continued to gather there across all three shows. On Saturday night, Liam Gallagher dedicated Bring It On Down to the people on the hill. On Sunday, the band went one step further.
Fans were seen wearing black ‘Gallagher Hill’ t-shirts, reportedly distributed by a crew member in a golf buggy. Sisters Claire and Kerri Davis told the Manchester Evening News they were told the shirts came directly from Liam. “He just came and was handing them out, he looked official,” said Kerri. “He said ‘they’re from Liam but I’ve only got a thousand.’”
Anaïs Gallagher also confirmed the shirts had been handed out, later sharing the footage on Instagram.
During the set, the band again acknowledged the crowd on the hill. As Cigarettes and Alcohol kicked in, Oasis cut live footage from the hill to the stage screens. Liam called out to the fans watching from a distance.
“I want you lot on the hill to be getting involved even if you are Man United fans,” he said. “I see you up there with your little flares, I heard you. C’mon don’t be shy.” Noel followed with, “We’re going live to Gallagher Hill,” before launching into the next track.
Footage shared online showed hundreds gathered on the mound despite official advice to stay away. The band showed no interest in shutting it down.
Liam and Noel both thanked the crowd near the end of the set. “For the last ten days the eyes of the world have been on Manchester and you’ve done yourself proud,” Noel said. “You’ve still got it.”
Oasis will now head to London for a string of shows at Wembley Stadium starting Friday 25 July. Blunt Magazine will be providing on- ground coverage of these shows.
