Amy Lee says the rise of women across rock and metal isn’t a moment, it’s something that keeps building.
Speaking on The Mistress Carrie Podcast, Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee reflected on seeing more women leading major rock spaces and why support between artists matters more than old industry narratives.
Lee pointed to a recent chart moment where Evanescence and The Pretty Reckless occupied the top spots (per Blabbermouth):
“We [EVANESCENCE] had… I forget which chart — I guess it was the Active Rock or whatever, we had the Number One slot. And THE PRETTY RECKLESS had Number Two. And, I was like, ‘How badass is that?’ Like, absolutely ruling it. Women on top. It’s really cool.”
Definition of success
For Lee, that success goes beyond chart positions:
“I need the women in my life,” she said. “I love the sisterhood, and the rock and metal sisterhood is amazing because it’s an ever-growing group.”
She added that support doesn’t replace standards:
“We all support and push each other… If you’re gonna make it that far, it can’t be about being a woman. That’s not gonna get you there. It’s gotta be you’re really hardworking and talented.”
That same idea has become part of Evanescence’s current live show, the band’s Sanctuary touring cycle has brought together a stacked lineup including Spiritbox, Nova Twins, Poppy and K.Flay, with Lee describing a nightly collaborative performance of Fight Like A Girl as one of the most meaningful moments of the set.
She also pushed back on outdated ideas that women in music are naturally competing against one another:
“One of the tools that used to be used… to keep us down was always sort of show and joke about this idea that we’re all fighting each other behind the scenes.”
The comments arrive as Evanescence prepare for their biggest Australian and New Zealand headline run in years, demand has forced the addition of a second Melbourne show after the original date sold out.
