Avatar 3 has, perhaps inevitably, joined the capital B club as James Cameron’s sci-fi epic breezes past a box office milestone.
Avatar: Fire And Ash wasn’t necessarily guaranteed to make All The Money when James Cameron unleashed the third chapter of his ambitious science fiction epic upon eager audiences, but it was guaranteed to at least make Most Of All The Money. Pointless arguments about Avatar’s lasting cultural footprint or lack thereof notwithstanding, there is an audience for these things, and most people seem to be in it. And then there’s that now-ancient Hollywood axion, “Never bet against James Cameron.” Always worth paying attention to, that one.
So, it should come as no surprise to anyone that Avatar: Fire And Ash has now racked up over US$1,000,000,000 at the global box office – in fact, at the time of writing, it’s sitting on $1,083,124,602, according to Box Office Mojo. That makes it the third highest grossing film of 2025. The surprise number one (to Western audiences, at least) is Ne Zha 2, a Chinese animated epic, that took a staggering $2,244,267,207. At number two we get another animated effort, Disney’s Zootopia 2, with $1,588,247,129. Zootopia 2 is still on release, so that number will rise, but I’d expect Avatar to overtake it within weeks – historically, people have lined up for the Avatar flicks again and again.
Avatar: Fire And Ash‘s current take makes it the 39th highest grossing film of all time, not adjusted for inflation, ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, but behind Transformers: Age Of Extinction, a handy reminder that these numbers do not meaningfully represent the quality of a film in any way. The highest grossing film of all time remains, of course, the original Avatar, with a sweet $2,923,710,708. In fact, James Cameron holds three of the four top slots – Avatar: The Way Of Water is the third-highest, with $2,343,477,301, while Titanic is fourth at $2,257,906,828. And while Fire And Ash may stick around at the multiplexes for a while, I can’t see it getting anywhere near those numbers. Still, you can’t complain about a bil.
