Avatar 3‘s gala Sydney debut, which would have had director James Cameron and star Sam Worthington in attendance, has been pulled at the last minute
Avatar: Fire And Ash was due to make its Australian debut today, with a six hour gala event at Event Cinemas IMAX kicking off at 4.30pm. That is no longer the case, with organisers cancelled both the premiere screening and a planned press junket after the mass shooting that took place at Bondi’s Archer Park on Sunday night.
“Out of deep respect for the victims of the Bondi shooting, the planned Avatar: Fire and Ash premiere event today in Sydney has been cancelled,” an issued statement reads. “Our hearts are with the community, the victims, their families and loved ones.”
At the time of writing, the death toll from the Bondi attack stands at 16, with at least 42 injured. The attack targeted a “Hanukkah by the Sea” community event hosted by the Chabad of Bondi, with an estimated 1000 people in attendance. One of the alleged gunmen, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, was killed at the scene, while the other, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, Sajid’s son, was shot during capture, and is now hospitalised in a serious but stable condition.
Writer and director James Cameron, star Sam Worthington, and many others were scheduled to walk the red carpet at the premiere, as part of the global publicity push for the third instalment of Cameron’s sci-fi environmental parable. Also starring, Zoë Saldaña, Joel David Moore, Sigourney Weaver, CCH Pounder, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Jack Champion, Brednan Cowell, and Jemaine Clement, the previous Avatar films are two of the highest-grossing films of all time, with a combined box office take of over five billion dollars.
Avatar: Fire And Ash is in cinemas from December 18, 2025.
