Brent Hinds, the former lead guitarist who co-founded the heavy metal band Mastodon, has passed away aged 51.

Brent Hinds, the former lead guitarist for Mastodon, has passed away aged 51 after a motorcycle accident.

Atlanta police shared a statement that Hinds had died after a car collided with his Harley-Davidson motorcycle late Wednesday night.

His former bandmates in Mastodon shared a statement this morning, writing:

“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night, Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many.”

Hinds would start the band in 2000, alongside bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor.

The guitarist would record eight studio albums with the band and win a Grammy Award in 2017 for Best Metal Performance for ‘Sultan’s Curse’ from the album Emperor of Sand.

Hinds and Mastodon went their separate ways in March earlier this year. At the time, they had said they had “mutually decided to part ways.” However, Hinds would later make comments that would contradict this statement.

Fellow contemporaries have already taken to social media to share tributes to the late guitarist.

Mark Duane of Lamb of God shared, “Brent Hinds was a bottle rocket of creative spirit and emotion,” the guitarist wrote.

“Brent’s perspective was as peculiar as it was intriguing….sometimes maddening, sometimes visionary. Then, just when he’d be almost to outer space, he’d touch back down for a minute with a kind word or thoughtful observation shot directly out of a gentle, loving heart that was all the while keeping time amidst the kaleidoscopic chaos of his energy.”

Opeth frontman Mikael Akerfeldt also shared a touching tribute, writing:

“We’d like to offer our warmest and most loving condolences to his family and friends, colleagues, fans, and of course to the whole Mastodon inner circle. The incredible band that was instrumental for making us and the world aware of the phenomenon that is Brent Hinds. Note that I can’t write about him in past tense just yet. He still “is.””

Matthew Heafy of Trivium also wrote, “There weren’t many like this man. That’s for sure. Rest in peace. Rest in power.”
