Courtney Love has never played by anyone’s rules, not the industry’s, not the media’s, and definitely not the public’s. Now, after decades of being pulled apart, praised, vilified and mythologised, the Hole frontwoman is taking ownership of her story with a new documentary titled AntiHeroine, premiering at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
Directed by Edward Lovelace and James Hall, the film promises a lens that looks past the headlines that shaped Love’s image in the ’90s and beyond.
As Variety revealed, the documentary tracks Love at home in London, where she relocated a few years back and follows her as she moves into a new chapter of sobriety and prepares to release fresh music for the first time in over ten years.
“Singer, songwriter and actor Courtney Love has long had an impact on rock and pop culture,” the film’s description reads.
“Now sober and set to release new music for the first time in over a decade, Courtney is ready to reveal her story, unfiltered and unapologetic.”
A long time coming
AntiHeroine has been in development “for some time,” showcasing not just Love’s present but her entire cultural footprint, the documentary features appearances from Michael Stipe, Melissa Auf der Maur, Eric Erlandson, Billie Joe Armstrong, Patty Schemel and Butch Walker, all who witnessed the evolution of Hole and the gravitational force that Love carried into every room.
Producer Julia Nottingham of Dorothy St Pictures said, “Courtney has waited a long time to tell her story, in her own words… We made this film because Courtney’s story is bigger than the headlines. It’s raw, complicated and deeply human.”
Love’s role in shaping the grunge era can’t be overstated, while the public often fixated on her marriage to Kurt Cobain and her highly scrutinised personal struggles, her work with Hole carved out a generation defining space for women in alternative music.
Live Through This and Celebrity Skin became essential records of the ’90s, with ‘Doll Parts’, ‘Celebrity Skin’ and ‘Malibu’ all charting on the Billboard Hot 100.
