Die Hard Is 100% A Christmas Movie In This Week’s Streaming Charts

Share

Die Hard isn’t the number one movie streaming this week, but it’s definitely on the seasonal charts.

Every year, the “is Die Hard a Christmas movie?” debate rears its ugly head, and every year the same three answers immediately leap to mind:

  • Yes.
  • Of course it is – have you seen the damn thing?
  • Must we do this every fucking year?

But this year you don’t just have to take my word for it; broad market forces have spoken for me, with the 1988 action classic coming in at a respectable number nine on this week’s streaming charts. Well done, Die Hard.

It’s a pretty Christmassy list, all told, with Prime’ Video‘s Oh. What Fun., a movie I will only watch if I’m too drunk to wrangle the remote control over the holidays, in the top slot, plus a slew of familiar seasonal offerings, such as Love Actually, Home Alone, and The Grinch, peppering the rest of the list. Meanwhile, the sheer power of irony seems to have elevated the genuinely dreadful The Polar Express to tenth place.

The big and rather welcome surprise on the TV charts is that the critically acclaimed queer Canadian hockey romance Heated Rivalry is the most watched series this week. Further down, we’ve got few surprises waiting for us – while Heated Rivalry knocked it out of first place, there was little chance that sci-fi dramedy Pluribus was gonna drop any further than #2, and Stranger Things‘ massive cultural weight has ensured it didn’t drop as precipitously as we might have expected. And it seems that people are still discovering the real time medical drama The Pitt – as they should, because it’s easily one of the best series of the year. But everything else is exactly what you’d expect.
