The Freedom 250 concert has taken another unexpected turn, with Donald Trump jokingly suggesting he may take the stage himself after a growing list of performers pulled out of the event.
The Great American State Fair, scheduled to run between June 25th and July 10th at Washington D.C.’s National Mall, was originally announced as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The initial line-up featured a mix of nostalgic chart toppers and legacy acts including Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, Bret Michaels, The Commodores, Young MC, Morris Day & The Time and C+C Music Factory.
However, several artists have since distanced themselves from the event, with some claiming they were unaware of its political associations when they originally agreed to appear.
Among those who have publicly withdrawn are Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, The Commodores, Young MC and Morris Day & The Time.
Donald Trump steps up
In response, Trump took to Truth Social with a lengthy post suggesting he could fill the gap himself (per NME):
“I understand Artists are getting ‘the yips’ having to do with their performance on Wednesday,” he wrote.
He then jokingly proposed replacing the departing acts with what he described as:
“The Number One Attraction anywhere in the World, the man who gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime, and he does so without a guitar.”
Trump continued by referring to himself as:
“The man who some say is the Greatest President in History (THE GOAT!).”
The post went on to suggest an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” could take place instead, describing it as a gathering for “Great Patriots” and calling it a “Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America.”
The artist departures have generated significant discussion in recent days, particularly after Young MC stated performers were allegedly not informed about the event’s political affiliations before agreeing to participate.
The event still retains support from several performers, as reported earlier Vanilla Ice recently defended his involvement, saying he views the concert as an opportunity to celebrate America rather than politics.
Fab Morvan, the surviving face of Milli Vanilli has confirmed he still plans to perform, describing the event as a chance to celebrate music and bring people together.
Whether the line-up changes further remains to be seen, but Freedom 250 is rapidly becoming one of the most talked about live music events of the year for reasons few could have predicted.
