Elton John has shared an update on his health, admitting that he is quickly losing his vision: “I’ve had the most incredible life, and there is hope. I’ve just gotta be patient that someday science will help me with this one.”
Sir Elton John has given an update on his eyesight, confirming the he’d lost vision in his right eye and that his left eye is also declining.
Last year, the ‘I’m Still Standing’ singer would open up about how an infection had left him blind in one eye on Good Morning America: “I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France,” he told Robin Roberts. “It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. And my left eye is not the greatest.”
The singer would share a new update in an interview with Variety, revealing that his ongoing sight issues have felt “devastating”.
“Because I lost my right eye and my left eye’s not so good, the last 15 months have been challenging for me because I haven’t been able to see anything, watch anything, read anything,” he explained, adding that he still has “hope” that the situation will get better.
“I’ve had the most incredible life, and there is hope. I’ve just gotta be patient, that someday science will help me with this one. Once they help me with this one, I’ll be fine,” he said. “It’s exactly like the AIDS situation. You mustn’t give up hope, you must be stoic, you must be strong, and you must always try and batter the door down to try and improve things.”
Sir Elton has been very candid about his ongoing health struggles in recent years, sharing in 2024 that “there’s not much of me left” following multiple surgeries.
“I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate, I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee,” he revealed at the premiere of his career documentary Elton John: Never Too Late. “In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip. But I’m still here.”
Sir Elton isn’t the only singer opening up about ongoing health issues, either. Last week, Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan revealed that he was going blind, revealing he only had “30 per cent” of his vision left. Still, the singer remained in good spirits, joking, “Nothing’s really changed apart from I can’t pole vault any more”.
