Evanescence’s Amy Lee Says New Single Reflects A World Where ‘Truth Is For Sale’

Share

Evanescence are back in motion, and their new single ‘Who Will You Follow’ isn’t pulling punches.

Amy Lee is aiming straight at the noise of modern life, where reality feels warped and nothing lands clean, speaking with Audacy Music, Lee unpacked the track and the band’s upcoming album ‘Sanctuary’, framing both as a response to the current climate (per Metal Sucks).

‘It’s about something. God — it’s where we’re at. It’s about, what is real? Breaking through the lies… it feels like truth is for sale.’

Cutting through the noise

Lee’s take isn’t subtle, the song leans into the idea that we’re drowning in information, much of it shaped by agendas.

‘I feel like we are just inundated with so much information now, with people that have a stake in what we believe,’ she said. ‘And so this for me is kind of — this is about breaking through that into the real world.’

It’s a familiar tension, but hearing it framed through Evanescence’s lens gives it weight, this isn’t just vague commentary, it’s frustration sharpened into something more direct.

‘Sanctuary’ isn’t an escape

The album title might suggest retreat, but Lee is clear that ‘Sanctuary’ isn’t about checking out from reality:

‘It’s like that — it’s a sanctuary, not an escape from this chaotic, surreal violent time, but escape from the lies… It is a sanctuary of truth — and community.’

That distinction matters, instead of offering comfort through avoidance, the band is leaning into the mess and carving out space inside it.

Writing from the edge

Lee described the writing process as intense and isolating, like disappearing into her own head until the words finally surfaced.

‘I feel like I have been just in this lyric cave of my mind, like an animal busting out of a cage this whole year… The lyrics are kind of the thing where I feel like they matter more than ever.’

Even with the music taking shape first, she left herself with the hardest task last:

‘It’s, like, you really gotta write it and it’s gotta be epic, ’cause at this point the music sounds killer.’

A return with weight behind it

‘Who Will You Follow’ marks Evanescence’s first new material in five years, setting the tone for ‘Sanctuary’, due out June 5th via BMG.

There’s pressure that comes with that gap, especially following ‘The Bitter Truth’, but instead of chasing trends, Lee seems locked into something more personal and more pointed. Not escapism or nostalgia, just a band stepping back into the world with something to say, even if that world feels like it’s slipping sideways.
