Joe Trohman is stepping off the stage — for now.
The Fall Out Boy guitarist has announced he’s taking the rest of 2025 off to undergo surgery on his right hand. “After years of managing ongoing issues… it’s become clear that I need surgery to avoid permanent damage,” he wrote in a statement. No fluff. No dramatics. Just a straightforward message from a guy who clearly doesn’t want to stop but knows he has to.
Trohman added that while he’s bummed to miss out on the band’s remaining tour dates this year, he’s “on track for a full recovery” and plans to be back when he’s ready. “Thanks so much for the love and support,” he closed out. No word yet on who’ll be stepping in to fill those sizeable shoes on guitar, though Ben Young — who subbed during Trohman’s 2023 mental health hiatus — seems the obvious choice.
Fall Out Boy, ever the show-must-go-on types, aren’t cancelling a thing. They hit Calgary tonight (July 8), then head off to Japan, South America, and across North America through late September. It’s business as usual — just without one of the founding members on deck.
It’s the second time Trohman’s had to step back in recent years. When he took a break in 2023 to prioritise his mental health, it was met with an overwhelming wave of support from fans. The same vibe is echoing now — because anyone who’s been to a FOB show knows Trohman’s energy is the glue between Pete’s chaos and Patrick’s control.
Let’s be real: hand surgery for a guitarist is no joke. This is the guy who’s been part of shaping the sound of Fall Out Boy since the Take This to Your Grave days. You don’t stick around in a band this long without giving a shit — about the music, about your fans, about doing it right.
Trohman stepping away now means he’s betting on longevity, not burnout. And in this industry? That’s the kind of move we should all get behind.
