The Foo Fighters have quietly parted ways with drummer Josh Freese, and it’s raised more than a few eyebrows across the rock community.
Freese confirmed the news himself in a statement posted to Instagram, saying the band called him Monday night and told him they were “going in a different direction with their drummer.” No explanation was offered, and none has been made public since.
Freese joined the Foos in 2023, stepping in after the untimely passing of Taylor Hawkins—a drummer who wasn’t just the backbone of the band but its irrepressible spirit. Freese was unveiled during the band’s Preparing Music for Concerts livestream, bringing a mix of humour, professionalism, and hard-hitting precision to their live set. He never recorded in the studio with them, but became the face behind the kit as they re-entered the touring circuit.
Despite being a seasoned session heavyweight—having played with Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, and hundreds of others—Freese admitted the firing stung. “In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry—just a bit shocked and disappointed,” he wrote. That said, he kept it classy, adding that he supports the band’s decision and understands the nature of the game. “I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine.”
In classic Josh style, he ended with a smirk, promising fans a “Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters” list—because if you’re going out, might as well crack a few jokes on the way down.
At time of writing, the Foo Fighters haven’t announced who will replace Freese. Their next live appearance is slated for 4 October at the F1 Grand Prix in Singapore, so odds are we’ll find out soon who’s behind the kit. Whether the band is rethinking their future sound or just looking to shake things up, it’s a bold move—and one fans aren’t likely to forget anytime soon.
