Fred Durst Says 311’s Debut ‘Music’ Helped Shape His Early Vision For Rap-Rock

Limp Bizkit and 311 have been sharing stages across Latin America this season, but it turns out the connection runs deeper than a tour poster.

Fred Durst has been openly fanboying over 311 for weeks, hopping onstage with them, requesting deep cuts, and now revealing just how much their 1993 debut Music meant to him long before Limp Bizkit broke through.

The two bands kicked off their run in late November, where Durst joined 311 to perform ‘Feels So Good’.

Last night in San Miguel, Peru, he jumped in again, this time for ‘Freak Out’, another track from Music.

Fans captured the moment, marking another full circle chapter in the growing mutual admiration between the acts.

Durst pays respect

Durst followed the performance with an Instagram post, explaining just how pivotal Music was during his formative years:

“An absolute honor to share the stage with @311 on this loserville tour. fact – @311 ‘s album MUSIC was one of the first of a small handful of bands that I was listening to back in the day when hip hop/rock/alternative was really starting to make sense. artists like beastie boys, urban dance squad, mike patton, rage against the machine, and @311 paved the way. always grateful for their gifts”.

It’s a rare glimpse into the DNA of a genre that dominated turn of the century heavy music, Durst has always worn his influences on his sleeve, but this tour is giving him a chance to revisit the era that sparked his vision in the first place.

For 311 fans, it’s validation from one of nü-metal’s biggest architects, for Bizkit fans, it’s a reminder that the band’s roots stretch beyond the genre they helped define.
