Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date has been confirmed to release September 4, 2025 on all platforms.
Well, folks, after a long six years, Hollow Knight: Silksong finally has a release date.
Developers Team Cherry confirmed the game’s release date last night by dropping an official reveal trailer. The video revealed that the official release date for the game would be September 4, 2025.
Silksong was initially announced back in 2018 as a piece of downloadable content for the original Hollow Knight game. Silksong would follow Hornet, a prominent character that you would face in the original game, and her story.
Over time, the game would quickly balloon in scope, and developers Team Cherry realised that Silksong would need to be its own title.
The game was officially announced in February 2019 and appeared at Nintendo’s E3 booth later that year. However, news would quickly dry up for a time after. The game would then receive a 2023 release date, which Xbox would confirm on social media. But, if you’re reading this now, you might be surprised to learn that the game was delayed indefinitely, with no new release date given.
Given the long stretches of radio silence, Silksong ended up receiving an almost “mythical” status in the gaming community. Many believed the game would never come out; others would cling to hope that any gaming event would be “the one” that would finally announce the much-coveted release date. Hell, fans were eagre for even a mere crumb of gameplay footage just to comfort them the game still existed.

Following the official release of the game being announced, Team Cherry have gone on to give an exclusive interview with Bloomberg’s game reporter Jason Schrier. In the interview, Team Cherry Co-Founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen explained that the development period was really as tumultuous as initially thought. The reason for such a long development cycle was that the team was having fun being creative and constantly implementing new ideas for the game.
When discussing why the game was unexpectedly delayed in 2023, the team shared that they genuinely believed they’d be able to meet their deadline. We did genuinely believe that was the case,” Pellen said. “There was a period of two to three years when I thought it was going to come out within a year.”
“I think we’re always underestimating the amount of time and effort it’ll take us to achieve things,” Gibson said. “It’s also that problem where, because we’re having fun doing it, it’s not like, ‘It’s taking longer, this is awful, we really need to get past this phase.’ It’s, ‘This is a very enjoyable space to be in. Let’s perpetuate this with some new ideas.’”
It wasn’t until this year that news of the game’s official release date came to manifest. The first was news that Silksong would be available to play at Melbourne’s own ACMI in September. Nintendo and Xbox also kept mentioning Silksong‘s release date, sharing that the game would be available to play on their new consoles upon launch.
“Launching it is obviously quite exciting,” Pellen said. “What comes after for us is equally as exciting.”
“The most interesting thing now is what can we add to it next,” Gibson said. “We got a plan. Admittedly, some of the plans for that stuff are kind of ambitious as well, but hopefully we can achieve some of it.”
In the same interview, the developers confirm that reviews won’t be available at launch, as the team will not be sending any early copies to the press. The team shared that they felt it was unfair for the media to play the game before their Kickstarter backers, and will be releasing the game for all on the same date.
Hollow Knight: Silksong releases on September 4, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S | X, Nintendo Switch 1 & 2, Steam, GOG and Humble Bundle.
