Jason Statham carves his way through a shipful of evil people smugglers in the satisfyingly bloody Mutiny trailer.

Action king Jason Statham unleashes his particular brand of righteous brutality on some richly deserving targets.

England’s favourite hard nut, Jason Statham, teams up with French action director Jean-François Richet (the brutal Plane, the better than you’d expect Assault On Precinct 13 remake) for this nautical thriller that sees ol’ Stath deliver some shocking violence unto a boatload of people smugglers. Like, really gnarly violence – there’s a boathook employed at one point. But since they’re the scum of the Earth, it’s deeply satisfying rather than horrifying. Let’s cue it up:

See what I mean? Cathartic as hell.

What’s the plot?

There is a thin skein of narrative underpinning this massacre. Written by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis, Mutiny sees Statham as London born cop Cole Reed, who’s investigating the aforementioned human trafficking ring when he gets framed for the murder of his billionaire friend Tibu. Keen to clear his name, he creeps aboard a cargo ship to gather evidence or something, finding an international conspiracy, a bunch of people who need rescuing, and even more people who need to sent to the next world. You can guess what happens next.

Who’s in it?

Jason Statham as our blood-drunk hero, Cole Reed; Jason Wong as Taran; plus Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller, Arnas Fedaravicius, and Adrian Lester in support.

When’s it out?

Mutiny is in Australian cinemas from August 20.

What’s the vibe?

I’m digging the whole “hero of the people” thing Statham has going on. It’s been an element that’s cropped up over the whole course of his career, but with Beekeeper and its imminent Timo Tjahjanto-directed sequel, A Working Man, and now mutiny, it feels to me like he’s decided that this is his brand and he’s committing to the bit. Not gonna lie, I’m very much here for it.
