Kurt Cobain’s Iconic ‘Foxes’ T-Shirt Heads To Auction

Share

More than three decades after it appeared in one of Nirvana’s most recognisable photo shoots, one of Kurt Cobain’s most iconic T-shirts is heading to auction.

The late Nirvana frontman’s blue Foxes promotional tee, worn during the band’s now legendary 1993 Anton Corbijn photo session is currently up for grabs through Julien’s Auctions, while the item was originally expected to fetch between $4,000 and $6,000 USD, bidding had already climbed beyond $8,000 before the auction’s closing date on May 29th (per Billboard).

The shirt is being sold by former Hole drummer Patty Schemel, who says Cobain personally handed it to her during the early ‘90s, the tee references the 1980 cult coming of age film Foxes, starring Jodie Foster, a movie both Schemel and Cobain bonded over during their friendship.

According to details shared through the auction listing, Cobain and Schemel regularly hunted for strange and nostalgic thrift store finds together, often swapping vintage shirts and obscure pop-culture memorabilia.

During the Corbijn shoot, stylists reportedly brought several wardrobe options, but Cobain specifically chose the Foxes shirt because of the pair’s shared love for the film.

The faded light blue tee features the movie’s logo on the front and the slogan “Daring To Do It” printed across the back, Cobain paired it with his trademark white oval sunglasses in the black and white portraits alongside Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, images that have since become deeply embedded in Nirvana history and remain instantly recognisable to fans today.

The auction also includes a signed authenticity letter from Schemel, detailing how she came to own the shirt.

“I went to Kurt and Courtney’s house to pick up Courtney for Hole rehearsals,” Schemel recalled. “Kurt came in and grabbed a shirt from a pile of clothes. He said, ‘You should have this.’”

The sale joins the long list of highly sought after Nirvana collectibles that continue to command massive attention decades after Cobain’s death in 1994, proving the cultural weight of even the smallest pieces tied to the grunge icon still hasn’t faded.
