Kyle Gass Says Tenacious D Will Return ‘Bigger Than Oasis’ After Hiatus

Tenacious D might’ve gone quiet, but Kyle Gass is making it clear the greatest rock duo on earth isn’t dead. It’s just… recovering from the kind of headline cyclone that turns one dumb moment into a months long hangover.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Gass says Tenacious D will come back, and when they do, he’s promising it’ll be “bigger than Oasis”, peak confidence and hilarious at the same time.

What triggered the hiatus

The hiatus traces back to a Tenacious D show in 2024, when Gass made an onstage joke related to the assassination attempt against then presidential candidate Donald Trump, it reportedly landed in the room, but outside of it, things escalated fast.

Jack Black isn’t just the guy from School of Rock anymore, he’s an actual Hollywood machine now, which means Tenacious D suddenly had a much bigger spotlight on them, and a lot less room to mess up.

Gass owned that mistake in the interview, calling it a serious failure of judgement:

“It was terrible judgment, obviously. I’ve felt terrible ever since, because it’s such a responsibility to not screw up like that.

“I wouldn’t wish it on anybody. It’s one of those things, once it was picked up, it just got worse and worse. It was a Defcon 2 for sure in the camp. And I did it. It was hard to take responsibility for it, but it was my f**k-up. When you’re in it, it’s hard to even think straight. It’s just this thing flooding and coming at you.

“We had to take the break. And I got it. Jack has this magnificent career; I can’t even count the franchises now. So as hard as it was, I just had to take the long ride home.”

A reunion on the horizon

Gass described his partnership with Black as “like a marriage”, saying their relationship has highs and lows, but it’s something you work through, not something you throw away.

And now, after “hashing it out”, he’s confident they’ll return.

“We will serve no D-wine before it’s D-time – but we will be back. We will return.”

There’s no timeline yet, but Tenacious D are down, not out, and when they come back, Gass wants it loud.
