Liam Gallagher on Oasis’ New Drummer Joey Waronker: “This Guy Is Special”

Share

There’s a new face behind the kit for Oasis—and Liam Gallagher is already smitten.

With their first reunion gig just around the corner (July 4, Cardiff, get your bucket hats ready), Oasis have been hammering through rehearsals in London, and the verdict is in: Joey Waronker, their new drummer, is a bit of a weapon.

Responding to a fan on X asking how Waronker’s holding up in the trenches, Liam cut straight to it: “He’s the best and we’re lucky to have him. I’ve enjoyed all our drummers but this guy is special.”

Waronker’s résumé reads like a who’s-who of alt-rock royalty: Beck, R.E.M., Elliott Smith, Roger Waters, Thom Yorke’s Atoms For Peace. And yeah, he’s not just some session guy—they picked a real one. He’d already proven his chops backing Liam and John Squire on their recent collab tour, and now he’s slamming his way through Oasis’ catalog like he’s been there since ‘94.

That said, not every fan is on board. After a rehearsal snippet of ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’ leaked online, one keyboard warrior applauded Waronker but said Liam’s vocals sounded “dreadful.” Liam’s reply? “SHUT UP.” Vintage.

The return of Oasis has stirred the usual mix of euphoria, cynicism, and endless drummer speculation. Tony McCarroll, the band’s OG drummer from the ‘Definitely Maybe’ era, was quick to say he wasn’t expecting a callback. Alan White—who drummed through the Britpop peak—teased involvement with a cryptic post last year, but clearly didn’t make the final cut.

The choice of Waronker might seem left-field, but it tracks. Oasis might be getting the band back together, but they’re not chasing nostalgia—they’re rewriting it on their own terms.

The reunion tour kicks off with 19 UK and Ireland shows, including seven nights at Wembley. As for the merch drop and the upcoming Amazon documentary Live 25, it’s clear: the machine is back in full swing. And with Waronker driving it, the engine sounds tighter than ever.
