Mark Morton Says Nobody Has Ever Truly Sounded Like Lamb Of God

Share

Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton has opened up about the band’s creative mindset behind their latest album Into Oblivion, while also admitting he’s surprised no one has ever fully copied the band’s signature sound.

Speaking with BangerTV’s Sam Dunn, Morton reflected on the challenge of explaining a band’s creative process after more than two decades in heavy music (per Blabbermouth).

“I’m just gonna be straight up with you, Sam. It’s such a strange thing every few years to have to talk about your creative process,” Morton said.

The guitarist explained that while music publications often look for a fresh narrative around every new album cycle, the reality behind Into Oblivion was far simpler.

“But the truth is, for me, what’s exciting about the new record, this time, is that we really don’t feel any pressure or obligation to do anything except make songs together and decide which ones we like.”

Embracing their style

Rather than trying to reinvent themselves, Morton said the band was comfortable embracing exactly what they are.

“I’m completely okay, in fact, more than okay, I’m thrilled that it can just sound like LAMB OF GOD. Let’s just have it sound like LAMB OF GOD. And it does. And who else does?”

That thought led Morton into one of the more interesting observations from the interview, questioning why no younger metal act has directly imitated the band’s formula despite their commercial success and influence across modern heavy music.

“Isn’t that weird, 25 years into a career, that nobody just straight up sounds like LAMB OF GOD?” he asked.

“Why has no one ever just come out and flat-out just ripped us off? Because let’s face it, we’ve been pretty successful and sold a lot of records.”

Into Oblivion has already been met with strong reactions from critics, with outlets praising the album’s aggression and energy while reaffirming Lamb of God’s place among modern metal’s most influential acts.

Produced and mixed by longtime collaborator Josh Wilbur, the album was recorded across multiple locations tied closely to the band’s history, including Richmond, Virginia and the legendary Total Access studio in California, where vocalist Randy Blythe tracked his vocals.
