Mickey Rourke has spoken about his housing woes. “If I needed money, I wouldn’t ask for no fucking charity”
As we recently reported, veteran actor and notorious wild man Mickey Rourke is apparently facing eviction from his Los Angeles home, and also apparently endorsed a GoFundMe to raise money to stave off homelessness. And we say “apparently” because Rourke has taken to Instagram to express his dismay and bafflement about the whole situation. According to Mickey, this whole GoFundMe dealio is news to him.
As we wrote on Monday, the received wisdom that the campaign was endorsed by the star of Sin City and The Pope of Greenwich Village. Indeed the campaign description reads: “This fundraiser is being created with Mickey’s full permission to help cover immediate housing-related expenses and prevent that from happening.”
At the time of writing, the campaign page is still up but donations have been paused, with a current total of US$97,543 out of a $100,000 goal amount.
And it’s paused, presumably, because Rourke has now stated that the whole thing is a misunderstanding – and an embarrassing one.
In a lengthy video, Rourke said that he would simply never ask for charity no matter his circumstances. “That’s not me. I’d rather… If I needed money, I wouldn’t ask for no fucking charity, I’d rather stick a gun up my ass and pull the trigger. My life is very simple, I don’t go to outside sources like that. Yeah, it is embarrassing, but I’m sure I’ll get over it like anything else, everything else.”
He adds, “Don’t give any money. And if you gave money, get it back. Listen, I’ve done a really terrible job of managing my career. I wasn’t very diplomatic. I had to go to over 20 years of therapy to get over the damage that was done to me years ago. I worked very hard to work through that, and I’m not that person anymore.”
Rourke went on to detail a list of grievances with his landlords, including allegations of lax maintenance, and says that drove him to stop paying rent. He also indicated that he was pursuing legal action.
How it all shakes out now is anyone’s guess.
