Original Oasis Drummer Tony McCarroll Explains Why He Got Sacked

Share

Tony McCarroll, Oasis’ original drummer, has finally shed light on the exact moment that led to him getting kicked out of the band and despite everything, he says he’d still sit down with Noel Gallagher for a cuppa.

McCarroll was with Oasis from the very beginning, playing on Definitely Maybe and early singles like Whatever and Some Might Say. But by 1995, he was out. He sued for unpaid royalties and walked away with a £550,000 settlement and no future claims. Since then, he and Noel have never spoken.

Speaking at a fan event in North Shields this week, McCarroll told The Sun the incident that sealed his fate happened in a Paris hotel in 1995.

“I was next door to Noel’s room, which I didn’t know,” he said. “I had an argument with some girl I was with, and the next day at soundcheck I’d just finished my bit. Noel turned around in front of everyone and went, ‘You fucking keep me awake again, you’re getting fucking sacked, mate.’”

McCarroll says he snapped. “Probably the most stupid thing I’ve ever done in my life, but I fronted him and said, ‘You won’t fucking speak to me like that again.’ A few weeks later, I got the P45.”

Despite it costing him his place in one of the biggest bands of the era, he stands by it. “What sort of man would it make me if I didn’t? Everyone was under threat every day, but I didn’t think I’d actually get sacked.”

These days, there’s no bitterness. He says he’s been watching the band’s current reunion tour and called it “amazing”. Asked if he’d ever talk to Noel again, his answer was clear: “Would I sit down and have a cup of tea, a Rich Tea, with Noel, and go, ‘What the fuck happened, mate?’ I would.”

Oasis are currently deep into their Live ‘25 tour, with a second night at Wembley Stadium set for tonight. The comeback so far has been loud, messy, and very Oasis. Really, just the way it should be. You can check out some of the footage from the performance below.
