Are you even a real dunker if you’re not lacing up for the Prahran Summer Jam? Melbourne is home to the biggest streetball championship in the world, which will return for its ninth bout this weekend on the 8th and 9th of February.
The Summer Jam represents a two-day festival of basketball and street culture, taking place in the heart of Melbourne’s basketball community, Prahran. Originally conceived by Daniel Ella and Eamon Larmar-Ripon in 2011, the event has expanded to feature open-air bars, food trucks, live music and more, a true celebration of the Aussie love for the sport.
World-renowned dunkers Isaiah Rivera, Jordan Kilganon and Guy Dupuy will participate, elevating the competitiveness of the event to the next level. Expect to see Rivera pull stunts once thought physically impossible, Kilganon flex his NBA-acclaimed mastery and Dupuy…well, you probably know what to expect from him, since he holds the title of one of the most searched athletes on the internet.
Basketball is on the up and up in Australia, with an 82% increase in viewership of the game. Our National Basketball League has been a kickstand for international careers, with players like South East Melbourne’s Mitch Creek enjoying stints in the NBA with teams like the Brooklyn Nets and the Minnestota Timberwolves. We’ll hopefully see some of our Aussie stars turn out for what will be an unforgettable weekend.
