Reese Maslen is back in Bilmuri, just months after stepping away from the band following abuse allegations made by a former partner, the guitarist has rejoined the lineup ahead of their ongoing US run.
The move lands quickly, and for some, uncomfortably, given how recently the situation unfolded.
Maslen originally exited in December, issuing a statement that acknowledged past behaviour and framed his departure as a step toward accountability (per Metal Sucks):
“I exhibited behavior on several fronts during a previous relationship that I deeply regret.
“I am so sorry not only to her, but to anyone else these behaviors have affected. At this point, I can only apologize and take the steps to be a better person for myself and everyone else in my life. Effective immediately, I am stepping down from Bilmuri. I loved every second of my time with them, but it’s important that I take this time to work on myself.”
A sudden return to the stage
Fast forward roughly four months, and Maslen is back, he confirmed the news himself ahead of Bilmuri’s April 17 show, suggesting the opportunity to return came unexpectedly.
“Since stepping down from Bilmuri last December, I’ve been doing the work to be better for myself and everyone around me. I assumed I would not be asked to rejoin the band, so I acted and spoke publicly as such.
“On Sunday, I was laying in bed when I got a call from Johnny; I’m coming back for the Kinda Hard tour. See you 2nite Denver”
The timing raises obvious questions, four months isn’t long, especially when allegations like these are still fresh in people’s minds, whether that time away reflects meaningful change or simply a pause is something only those directly affected can really speak to.
What this means for Bilmuri
For Bilmuri, bringing Maslen back into the fold is a decision that will inevitably split opinion, the band hasn’t publicly unpacked the move in detail, leaving fans to fill in the gaps themselves.
In scenes built on community and accountability, situations like this rarely fade quietly, some will see a chance at redemption, others will question whether enough time, or transparency, has passed.
