Robert Eggers Is Getting The Goth Gang Back Together For Werewulf

Share

The Nosferatu director’s medieval werewolf movie will sport some familiar faces – wonder which will be furry?

Robert Eggers likes to use the same stock company of actors when he can, with cast members recurring across all his films from The Witch to Nosferatu. Willem Dafoe, to highlight the most obvious example, has now been in all of Eggers’ films except his first. That trend looks set to continue as Deadline reports that the former Green Goblin is in talks to join Eggers’ next film, Werwulf.

Also currently nutting out the details are Lily Rose-Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, which will make for three veterans of Nosferatu on board if they all sign on the dotted line.

Werwulf is due to start shooting at Elstree in the UK this September, with a projected release on December 26, 2026. Other than that, not much is known about the project. Eggers has let it be known that it’s a werewolf movie and it’s set in 13th century England. The director is writing the script with his The Northman co-writer, Sjón, and will contain “dialogue true to the time period and translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English” so it looks like we’re doubling down on The Witch‘s historically accurate dialogue.

Eggers has a pretty full slate at the moment. In addition to the imminent Werwulf, he’s also on board to make a new version of A Christmas Carol, once again with walking good luck charm Willem Dafoe, he’s also attached to a mooted sequel to classic ’80s sexuality-awakener, Labyrinth, which strikes me as a bad idea across the board, but there’s no resisting the terrible, light-eating gravity of brand recognition, is there? Although a Labyrinth infused with scrupulously-researched pre-Victorian fairy and goblin lore is an intriguing prospect. Maybe throw some redcaps in there and see what happens…
