Soulfly have never exactly been soft, and their latest move leans even further into their fun universe.
The Max Cavalera led outfit just dropped a new animated video for ‘Favela/Dystopia’, and it’s as twisted and abrasive as you’d expect.
Premiering just over 12 hours ago (at time of article), the clip for ‘Favela/Dystopia’ trades live footage for something far more surreal, handled by Creeptoons, the animation pulls from a strange mix of influences, blending the warped, gothic feel of The Nightmare Before Christmas with the raw, street level grit of City Of God.
It’s a clash that mirrors the track itself, Soulfly have always lived in that space between groove heavy metal and something more volatile, and this visual doubles down on it, there’s no polish here, just jagged edges and uneasy energy.
Soulfly ‘Favela / Dystopia’ Music Video
Still pushing forward on the road
The release lands while Soulfly are deep into a North American run supporting the ever-unhinged Gwar, alongside Australia’s own King Parrot, it’s a lineup that feels less like a tour and more like a travelling circus of extremes.
Even this far into their career, Soulfly aren’t slowing down or softening the edges, if anything, they seem more comfortable leaning into the extreme that’s defined them since day one, this latest video showcases just that.
No clean lines, no safe choices
There’s something refreshing about how little Soulfly care about trends, while other legacy acts smooth things out with age, Cavalera continues to push abrasive visuals and sounds that feel deliberately uncomfortable.
‘Favela/Dystopia’ isn’t trying to win anyone over, it’s built for those already locked into Soulfly’s world, where brutality and atmosphere sit side by side without explanation.
