South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have announced that the long running animated series is “changing its name” to South America ahead of Season 29, in another swipe at Donald Trump.
The pair unveiled the gag this week alongside new Season 29 artwork carrying the altered title.
“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA,” Parker and Stone said (per Hollywood Reporter).
“We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”
Whether the title change will extend beyond the promotional stunt remains unclear, but the joke continues South Park’s recent focus on Trump and his administration.
The move takes aim at Trump’s push to rename geographic locations with “America” branding. In August, Trump signed an executive order directing US federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as Lake America, while he has also publicly floated renaming New Mexico as New America.
Apple and Google have both adopted the Lake America designation for US users of their mapping services, giving Parker and Stone another target for the announcement.
The stunt lands only days after South Park won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, the show’s first victory in the category since 2013.
The series then followed that win with another Trump jab, posting an image of its animated version of the president holding the trophy alongside the line, “You finally got your Emmy.”
Season 29 will premiere in the US on Wednesday, September 16th at 10pm ET/PT on Comedy Central.
When Does South Park Season 29 Air In Australia?
Australian viewers will be able to stream the new season on Paramount+ from Thursday, September 17th.
Paramount has confirmed next day availability in Australia, Canada and the US, although an exact Australian release time has not yet been announced.
Additional episodes are scheduled to premiere in the US on September 30th, October 14th, October 28th, November 11th and November 25th.
