The children yearn for Spider-Man as up to an eighth of the global population cue up Marvel’s latest trailer.
As we reported recently while giving a low whistle of appreciation under our breath, the trailer for Sony and Marvel‘s upcoming Spider-Man Brand New Day absolutely obliterated streaming records when it dropped, accruing a staggering 718.6 million views in its first 24 hours and becoming the most viewed trailer debut in history. Impressive stuff.
So while it may not exactly be surprising, it’s just as impressive to learn that the view-ometer has now clicked over into the billions – 1.3 billion, to be exact, according to Variety. That makes it the most viewed movie trailer in history. Not bad for a plucky kid from Queens.
For those who’ve been living off the grid, Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Tom Holland’s fourth outing as the wall-crawling hero who, after the climax of Spider-Man: No Way Home, has now been completely forgotten by the world, both as Spider-Man and in his everyday identity of Peter Parker. Now a full time crimefighter, Spidey starts experiencing strange mutations – including the organic web shooters as seen in the Sam Raimi trilogy. But, of course, a dangerous and most likely super-villainous threat lurks in the background, but we’ll probably have to wait for another trailer before any light gets shed on that. Sure looks like The Hand to me, though – that’s the evil horde of ninjas who crop up in Daredevil from time to time. Some of my nerdier friends think the film is drawing on the 2005 comics storyline “The Other“, so hit that link if you want to hazard a few spoilers.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and written by Chris Mckenna and Erik Sommers (The LEGO Batman Movie), Spider-Man: Brand New Day co-stars Zendaya, Ned Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. It hits Australian cinemas on July 30.
