The Mutt Of Steel has only days to live, which instantly puts Supergirl’s emotional stakes through the roof.
Never underestimate the motivating power of an injured animal, aspiring screenwriters. Lest we forget, it was a murdered mutt that reawakened the Baba Yaga in John Wick, after all. Not that Krypto, the enthusiastic super-pup introduced in James Gunn‘s Superman, is killed, mind you – wouldn’t want to give you that impression. But as the new trailer shows, he’s poisoned by some random gang of space scum, and Supergirl’s got only three days to retrieve the antidote – which will clearly involve beating the hell out of a lot of colourful cosmic crooks.

What’s the plot?
As the official synopsis tells us:
When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella) and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl takes it’s inspiration from the pretty great comics miniseries Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, in which our hard-drinking heroine teams up with fellow orphan in the form of alien foundling Ruthye Marye Knoll, and sets off on a mission of revenge against alien gang boss Krem Of The Yellow Hills. This seems to be following the same beats, but with now with the added attraction of hyper-violent anti-hero Lobo.
Who’s in it?
- Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El AKA Supergirl, Superman’s cousin, who was raised on an errant chunk of Krypton and watched everyone around her die of Kryptonite poisoning, leaving with her with a hefty dose of PTSD and a bit of a live fast, die young situation going on.
- Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem Of The Yellow Hills, the villain of the piece.
- Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young orphan and human (well, alien) MacGuffin.
- David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Supergirl’s father.
- Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, Supergirl’s mother
- Jason Momoa as Lobo: the main man! The Last Czarnian! The ‘Bo! He who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it! And so forth. One of the most obvious and welcome casting choices in the history of theatrical performance.
When’s it out?
Supergirl hits cinemas on June 25, 2026.
What’s the vibe?
It’s definitely ticking all the right boxes.
