The first teaser for Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is subtitled “The Spiral”, and Tatiana Maslany‘s Paula is definitely spiraling when we meet her: freshly divorced, slugging her way through a custody battle, wrestling with an identity crisis – and that’s before all the murder, blackmail, and whatnot starts piling up. But don’t underestimate a soccer mum, friendo – they’ll surprise ya.

What’s the plot?
Seems like a twisty one, judging by the official synopsis:
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed follows newly divorced mom Paula (Tatiana Maslany) as she falls down a dangerous rabbit hole of blackmail, murder and youth soccer. Convinced she witnessed a crime — while simultaneously struggling through a custody battle and an identity crisis — Paula begins her own investigation, one that could unravel a greater conspiracy while also holding the keys to rebuilding her family and sense of self.

What’s the vibe?
I’m a sucker for a sunshine noir – your Chinatowns, your Long Goodbyes, LA Confidential, Drive and what have you. This one, which come to us from the great comedy director (and dreadful horror director) David Gordon Green and creator David J. Rosen, is being billed as a dark comedy, clearly fits into that genre tradition, so that and the presence of Tatiana Maslany and Jake Johnson certainly have my attention. Let’s see what the full trailer brings us down the track.
