The director of Alien and Blade Runner has adapted Peter Heller’s post-apocalyptic best seller.
Legendary director Ridley Scott seems to have dozens of projects on the boil in various stages of development all the damn time, so it’s always interesting to see what eventually finds its way in front of a camera. As an example, he was supposed to do a biopic of the Bee Gees before he wound up doing this, and I am fascinated by what Scott’s practiced eye can capture in the disco era. Instead, we have The Dog Stars, a new post-apocalyptic science fiction flick. Well, it’d be churlish to complain.
The Dog Stars Trailer
What’s the plot?
Adapted by screenwriter Billy Ray from the 2012 novel by Peter Heller, The Dog Stars is “…a riveting, epic thriller set in a world where survival is instinct, but humanity is a choice. Scott tells the story of Hig, a young pilot who, together with a military survivalist, Bangley, has carved out an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal post-apocalyptic world until a mysterious radio transmission spurs Hig to venture into the unknown in search of the hope and humanity he still believes exists.”
Who’s in it?
- Jacob Elordi as Hig, a civilian pilot living with his dog.
- Josh Brolin as Bangley, an aloof, gun-toting ex-Marine and Hig’s companion.
- Margaret Qualley as Cima, a young medic and Hig’s love interest.
- Guy Pearce as Pops, a former Navy SEAL and Cima’s father.
- Allison Janney.
- Benedict Wong.
When’s it out?
The Dog Stars hits cinemas on August 27.
What’s the vibe?
I’ve hit a weird point where I don’t much care whether a new Ridley Scott movie is good or bad, I just want to see what he does. And after Gladiator II and Napoleon, frankly we’re due for a win.
