Queensrÿche’s Todd La Torre Defends Political Commentary, Says Some Trump Voters Regret Their Choice

Share

QUEENSRŸCHE vocalist Todd La Torre has defended his decision to speak publicly about political issues, arguing that musicians should not be expected to remain silent simply because they perform in a band.

During an appearance on TV War, part of Greece’s Metal Hammer TV programming, La Torre pushed back against criticism from fans who believe artists should avoid discussing politics.

He noted that political and social themes have been woven into QUEENSRŸCHE‘s music for decades, particularly on landmark releases such as Operation: Mindcrime (per Blabbermouth).

Referencing the band’s history, La Torre pointed out that politically charged lyrics have long been a part of the group’s identity and suggested that similar messages released today would spark intense debate in the current political climate.

The singer said he frequently encounters criticism online whenever he shares his opinions, but remains unfazed by demands to “shut up and sing.”

“First and foremost, I am an American. Never mind the singer. I’m an American. I have every right.”

Freedom of speech

La Torre argued that freedom of speech applies to everyone, regardless of profession, and expressed concern about the rise of online echo chambers that reinforce existing beliefs rather than encouraging discussion.

The Florida based frontman also claimed that a growing number of supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump are now questioning the direction of the administration.

“I only care about what’s true,” he said, before adding that there is “a lot of buyer’s remorse” among some voters who feel current events have not matched their expectations.

While discussing broader issues in the United States, La Torre touched on gun violence and political division, describing the country as deeply polarised. He clarified that his opinions are his own and should not be viewed as official positions of QUEENSRŸCHE.

“When I voice things, I am voicing things as Todd. I am not speaking on behalf of the band.”

La Torre explained that although he often writes lyrics touching on political or social themes, his goal is not to tell listeners what to think.

“I try to push you to think, not what to think.”

The singer concluded by saying he remains hopeful despite growing global tensions, adding that he closely follows international affairs and values hearing perspectives from people living in different parts of the world.

La Torre joined QUEENSRŸCHE in 2012 and has recorded four studio albums with the band, most recently 2022’s Digital Noise Alliance.
