A new piece of Wayne Static studio footage has surfaced online, giving fans a stripped back look at the late Static-X frontman recording ‘Down’.
The clip lands in the middle of an increasingly messy situation surrounding an unauthorised documentary spearheaded by Society 1’s Matt Zane.
Shared on March 30, the footage captures Static alone in the vocal booth during sessions for Wisconsin Death Trip, absolutely no polish, just his voice cutting through the room with surgical precision (per Lambgoat).
A documentary tangled in legal pushback
Zane’s documentary, centred on the final years of Wayne Static and Tera Wray, has been moving forward despite legal resistance from both estates, a failed crowdfunding campaign hasn’t slowed him down, with Zane insisting he’ll fund the project himself.
He’s previously claimed the couple personally asked him to oversee the film before their deaths, that claim has been met with resistance, with cease and desist orders reportedly issued as tensions continue to build.
There’s also the question of music, the Static estate has blocked access to unreleased material, forcing Zane to audition new vocalists to re-record tracks for the film. At the same time, the band’s official documentary Evil Disco: The Rise, Fall, And Regeneration Of Static-X is also in motion, adding another layer to an already fractured narrative.
Inside the ‘Down’ vocal take
The newly surfaced clip shows Static delivering ‘Down’ in a single uninterrupted take, Zane described the moment bluntly:
‘This is really something to see and hear. Zero effects, not even any amplification — just Wayne singing raw right in front of you, hitting all the highs and lows. One take, all the way through. No auto-tune, no music to hide anything. It really shows how unique, special, and powerful he was as a vocalist.’
Why this footage matters
Beyond the controversy, the clip hits hard because it strips away the industrial sheen that defined Static-X, what’s left is the voice that powered Wisconsin Death Trip in its purest form.
It’s a rare look behind the curtain, just Wayne Static locked in, proving exactly why that record still hits decades later.
