Every week, we take a look at what’s hitting cinemas and streaming and separate the wheat from the chaff.
It’s an interesting week, with Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps loosening their grip on the box office’s throat just enough to let a few cool-looking options slip though. We have a bit of horror, a bit of heroic fantasy, and a bit of frothy family fun as a palate cleanser.
And for the home crowd, I can’t see anything whipping Netflix‘s Wednesday this week, but here’s the thing: there ain’t much of it, so here’s a couple more couch time possibilities for your perusal.
In Cinemas
Weapons
Barbarian director Zach Cregger brings us another creepy horror flick. It’s a macabre mystery in which all the kids in school teacher Julia Garner‘s class sneak out of their rooms in the middle of the night and disappear into the woods, presumably never to be seen again. All bar one, that is, which gives me Pied Piper vibes. Josh Brolin and Alden Ehrenreich co-star.
Freakier Friday
The reboot of the remake, and the seventh film in the overall Freaky Friday franchise, which still blows my mind a little. Lindsay Lohan is back, Jamie Lee Curtis is also back, and they’re back in each other’s bodies. I think – there’s a whole new generation of characters involved in the body-swapping shenanigans. Seems like a good time, but I honestly cannot tell how Disney decides what gets a theatrical release these days and what’s earmarked for streaming.
Red Sonja
The director of Solomon Kane, RJ Mitte, returns to the hugely heroic world of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard for this sword-swinging dark fantasy. Revenge‘s Matilda Lutz is the titular warrior woman, hell bent on revenge on the evil Emperor Dragan the Magnificent (Robert Sheehan) and yes, that’s hard to read with a straight face. But Solomon Kane was a good time, and I have a screener link right here that I’m about to cue up, so with any luck I’ll have a review for you soon.
Streaming
Wednesday Season 2
Well, Wednesday Season 2 Part 1 at any rate, as four fresh episodes of the Addams Family-derived boarding school soap are now streaming on Netflix. Jenna Ortega is the titular wan waif, packed away to Nevermore Academy, a school for literal young monsters, and dealing with adolescence and the occasional murder. Guest stars absolutely everyone.
Chief Of War
Jason Momoa is real 18th century Hawaiian murder machine Kaʻiana in this Apple TV+ historical series, which follow the big unit through the various spectacularly bloody clashes that presaged the unification of Hawaii. It’s all very Braveheart, with all the brutal battles and Machiavellian plotting you could want, plus Big Jase rides a tiger shark in the first episode, which is well worth checking out. The first three eps are up now, with six more to come.
King Of The Hill Season 14
Mike Judge’s superb observational animated comedy returns after far too long, having lost none of its insight. Nonplussed Texan everyman Hank Hill is back, along with wife Peggy, son Bobby, and the rest of the sprawling supporting cast, ready to tackle all that our current horrible moment has to offer. Honestly, it’s just one of the best animated comedies every made. On Disney+.
