Karl Urban’s Enjoying Himself In The Mortal Kombat II Teaser

Share

The Boys’ Billy Butcher mugs for the camera in our first look at the upcoming sequel.

Karl Urban has actually not spent much time in the direct-to-video/digital mines, which is surprising – the cheerfully cheap, gleefully violent milieu fits him like a fingerless glove. Just check out the first teaser for the upcoming Mortal Kombat II, which showcases his character Johnny Cage’s “illustrious” film career.

Mortal Kombat II Teaser Trailer

What’s the plot?

All we really know is that following the events of 2021’s Mortal Kombat, evil transdimensional overlord Shao Kahn swore he’d come back with an army to conquer the Earthrealm. In response, thunder god Raiden set off to recruit more heroes for the upcoming war. First cab off the rank is Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage, and here we are.

Or, as the official synopsis stridently tells us:

From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II. This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

Karl Urban stars as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, with Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion.

Director Simon McQuoid returns to helm the follow up to his explosive 2021 cinematic adventure, from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, based on the videogame created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The film is produced by Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh and McQuoid, and executive produced by Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Slater and Lawrence Kasanoff.

What’s the vibe?

Look, I saw Big Trouble in Little China at a very formative age, and matured on a diet of weird Hong Kong fantasy flicks like Zu Warriors From The Magic Mountain. It doesn’t take a lot for me to sign up for something like Mortal Kombat II. Whether it’s good or not is almost beside the point. But hey! This looks like fun so far.
