INXS Has Won Triple J’s 2025 Hottest 100 of Australian Songs

Triple J has named INXS’ track ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ as Australia’s favourite hit in their hottest 100 Australian list.

The Triple J 2025 Hottest 100 Australian songs has officially wrapped.

After a long eight-hour broadcast, INXS officially claimed the number one track. We love democracy.

INXS were big favourites coming into the countdown, with AAA Backstage claiming that ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ was the sleeper hit to win. It was neck and neck with Hilltop Hoods’ famous hit ‘The Nosebleed Section’, however INXS clutched victory with the hit.

The classic Aussie band landed at number 59 with ‘Need You Tonight’, keeping everyone in suspense until ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ claimed the final track.

The music event had asked Australians to share 10 of their favourite Aussie tracks. Whoever received the most votes would claim the top spot.

For this list, voters could only select tracks from Australian artists. You could vote for Aussie songs that featured international artists, for example, “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX. However, Young Franco, EARTHGANG & Jafunk’s ‘Lose Control’ was a no-go.

Similarly, Live A Version tracks were also barred from Triple J’s hottest 100 Australian songs list.

Double J will be presenting tracks 200 to 101 that just barely made didn’t make the official list next week.

There were several upsets throughout the day. Jimmy Barnes ‘Working Class Man’ came in only at 56 on the list. Jet’s ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ also claimed the 23rd spot, eliciting memories of a funny monkey YouTube video.

Kylie Minogue‘s ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’ was also a frontrunner pick for the top 5 spots; however only came in at the 27th spot (four spots behind Jet, just saying).

Other frontrunners were John Harnham’s ‘You’re The Voice’, one of Australia’s most recognisable anthems. However, the song barely came in close, landing at the 15th spot.

Gotye and Kimbra‘s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ was also tipped for the top spot. The Australian singer’s previous track, ‘Hearts A Mess,’ came in at number 86. If it weren’t for Doechii‘s latest hit single ‘Anxiety’ sampling the track, it’s tough to say where the 2010 classic might have landed. However, the famous single landed at the number 10 spot.

Powderfinger were also staples of the list, popping up a total of three times with (Baby I’ve Got You) On My Mind at the 70th spot, These Days at the 14th spot and My Happiness at number six.

AC/DC was another contentious band to predict in the list. The band entered the list at the 37th spot with ‘Back in Black’. The iconic Bon Scott-era track ‘Highway to Hell’ also landed only a few places later at 31.

The band’s ultimate 1990 hype track track ‘Thunderstruck’ also came in at number 13.

Paul Kelly’s ‘How To Make Gravy’ topped several predictions for the top spot. The iconic Christmas song was released in 1996 and over the years has remained an Aussie Christmas institution. In a surprising twist, the song only hit the ninth spot on the list.

Cold Chisel also hit high back to back spots with ‘Khe Sanh’ and ‘Flame Trees’ landing at the eighth and seventh spots.

Tame Impala were neck in neck for the top spot. The band’s ‘The Less I Know The Better’ came in at the 19th spot.

The Veronica’s were also fan favourites with several expecting the group to land high on the list. Their first entry, ‘4ever’ came in at number 76. However, their track ‘Untouched’, claimed the mighty third spot.

Coming into the day, Hilltop Hoods were tapped for the number one spot with ‘The Nosebleed Section’. The hip-hop group claimed the 73rd spot with ‘1955 [Ft. Montaigne & Tom Thum]’ and were suspisciously absent for the remainder of the list. Until, of course, they came in landing at number two.
